Thank you, so kind Doña Margarita, for having
displayed for me the treasure, too hidden, of the painter
most gaucho and most universal; most simple and most understanding;
most joyful and most tender; most clear and most veiled
of South America. The same way he watched the sun and the shade
at noon, he watched the cloudy at dusk. He would comfort
funerals and poor blacks, and gave away to magnates a compasionate
smile.
My most precious memories of Montevideo are Figari's
paintings.

This was surely on his first visit to the house of my grandmother Margarita, daughter of Pedro Figari. I met him on a similar visit of his to Montevideo, probably almost twenty years later, on a date that might appear in some archive.
